To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh-UK diplomatic relations UK High Commissioner Robert Chatterton Dickson said that Bangladesh has become a role model for positive transformation by tackling political and governance challenges as a vibrant, independent nation. Dickson recalled Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's historic visit to the United Kingdom in January 1972 and his meeting with British Prime Minister Edward Heath, which formed new friendships between two countries and accelerated Bangladesh's recognition as an independent country. Though humanitarian aid was the initial support for Bangladesh, later UK expanded it which includes research, health, education, disaster risk reduction, poverty alleviation, women empowerment and so on. For the friendly relationship and continuous support UK, approximately six lack Bangladeshis have chosen and settled in the United Kingdom as their home.
