Bangladesh, according to High Commissioner Robert Chatterton Dickson, has become a role model of positive transformation while continuing to face political and governance challenges as a vibrant, independent nation marking the 50th anniversary of the diplomatic relationship between Bangladesh and the United Kingdom, and emphasized the UK's pride in this journey. He recalled Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's historic visit to the United Kingdom in January 1972, where he met with UK Prime Minister Edward Heath before returning to his newly-born home from Pakistan jail. This journey made new friendships and accelerated Bangladesh's recognition as an independent nation.Dickson noted that the initial support for Bangladesh was humanitarian relief, but that it eventually shifted to research, health, education, disaster risk reduction, poverty alleviation, and women empowerment. As Bangladesh grew, the UK broadened its relationship by assisting with capacity building for Bangladesh military, police, and government officials.
