Bangladesh, according to High Commissioner Robert Chatterton Dickson, has become a role model of positive transformation while continuing to tackle political and governance issues as a dynamic, independent nation, and stressed the UK's delight in this journey. He remembered Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's historic journey to the United Kingdom in January 1972, during which he met with British Prime Minister Edward Heath before returning to his newly-born homeland from Pakistan jail. This journey forged new bonds and hastened Bangladesh's recognition as an independent country. Dickson explained that humanitarian relief was initially provided to Bangladesh, but that the focus then turned to research, health, education, disaster risk reduction, poverty alleviation, and women empowerment.
