With the fluctuating levels of the Brahmaputra river, the largest peanut market in Rangpur is seldom located in the same location for more than a year in a row. The market is usually put up adjacent to a boat base, which is also moved from year to year depending on the height of the river. This year, however, owing to low water levels, both were set up in Faluar Char, which is a new site for both. Peanuts are sown in the middle of October and harvested from the final week of December to the first week of January. They are harvested in the middle of October. For each bigha of land purchased for between Tk 8,000 and Tk 10,000, char farmers get 12 to 15 maunds of produce. They are able to provide for their family by selling the fruit they grow.
