At a time when COVID-19 cases are on the rise and hospitals are overloaded with patients, the World Health Organization (WHO) has approved two new treatments to fight against the virus's severe illness and death. WHO recommended the use of arthritis drug baricitinib with corticosteroids to treat critical Covid patients and evidence shows that baricitinib increases survival rates and reduces the requirement for ventilation with no side effects. WHO also suggested to use Sotrovimab on people who are most likely at highest risk of hospitalization, such as the elderly, people with immune-deficiencies or with diseases such as diabetes. According to an AFP tally, the coronavirus has killed at least 5,540,918 individuals globally since the outbreak began in China in December 2019. Amid a global surge in Omicron cases, countries are suspending international flights and schools are closing to curb the spread of the highly infective virus. Meanwhile, British researchers indicated that young children and babies are more likely to be hospitalized with Omicron than older children though the cases are still mild.
